Easy Foam Seat Cushion Using a Foam Mattress Pad

I think that nooks are one of the cutest things in the world. They're just so cozy and lovable.
In my room there was a wall that was empty and needed some TLC. So about six months ago I bought some cubbies from Target, intending to cover them with a seat cushion, but then I found out how much foam cost. WHEW!!! That stuff isn't cheap. So I kept putting it off until I decided I was just going to buy foam no matter how much it was. But then one day I was walking around in Target looking for storage cubbies when I saw a foam mattress topper and it hit me, i could just cut that up and make a seat  cushion out of that! And the best part, it was only $15 for a twin sized topper. And that's how I came up with this:

It was very easy to whip up. PLUS you get to use a staple gun, it doesn't get much better than that.
If you want to make one, just grab a foam mattress topper (make sure to measure the area you're covering before you buy the topper so you have enough foam). You also need plywood (the size of the area your covering), a staple gun, and some batting. Oh yah, and you're also going to need some fabric to cover the foam. I got the laminated fabric I used for this project at Ikea for a great deal.

Once you have all of your materials, you're going to lay out your foam mattress topper and cut out two pieces of foam the same size as the area you're going to cover. I cut out two so that the cushion would be a little thicker than just a single layer of foam. I also used my plywood as a stencil on the foam so they would be the same sizes.

Once you've cut out the pieces of foam you're going to put the foam onto the wood, bumpy sides together so that nothing pokes out.

Then you're going to take some batting and wrap it around the foam and staple it nice and tight to the plywood. then you're going to wrap the fabric around the foam and staple it on top of the batting.
FINALLY you're going to take the ends of the fabric and batting and fold it like a present. that's it. Enjoy

  6. I was wondering how this seat is holding up compared to the regular high density foam you would use for such applications. I have a mattress that I was looking to use the same way as you did.
